‘Innofest: Festival Driven Innovation’ is an innovation programme in the North of the Netherlands which has united 8 festival organizations – each with their own identity – to use festivals as a testing ground or ‘living lab’. Festivals are a mini model of society, facing the same problems cities do. A temporary village, with its own made-to- measure infrastructure, is stamped out of the ground to meet the basic needs for power and water, food, drink and a place to sleep. Although temporary, a lot of thought is put into the design and layout of festival grounds beforehand. People need space, smart solutions for power, water and so on. This is why festivals are the ideal setting for testing innovative products and ideas and interact with future users to iterate with on the spot! The aim is to become a true driver for innovation by co-creation, inspiration and pilots on the spot.
